Asbestos safety in your home
Our guide to asbestos tells you what you need to know and who you should contact if you're concerned about it.
Management of Asbestos GuideOur commitment to asbestos safety
We are committed to keeping our homes safe and ensuring that asbestos is managed responsibly.
Asbestos safety is managed in line with our Asbestos Management Policy, which sets out how we meet our legal and regulatory responsibilities and how asbestos is safely managed across our homes.
Understanding asbestos
- asbestos is a material that was commonly used in building construction in the past. It can be found in some homes, particularly those built before the year 2000
- asbestos is not dangerous if it is in good condition and left undisturbed. It only becomes a risk to health if it is damaged or disturbed and asbestos fibres are released into the air
How we manage asbestos
In line with our Asbestos Management Policy, we:
- identify and manage asbestos where it may be present in our properties
- keep records of known or suspected asbestos‑containing materials
- ensure contractors have the information they need before carrying out work
- take appropriate action if asbestos is damaged or at risk of disturbance
- arrange removal or treatment of asbestos where required using competent specialists
Our approach is focused on managing asbestos safely and proportionately, in line with legal requirements.
Your safety in your home
To help keep you safe, please remember:
- do not drill, sand, cut or disturb walls, ceilings, floors or fittings without checking first
- do not carry out DIY works without permission where required
- never attempt to remove asbestos yourself
If asbestos is present and in good condition, it does not usually need to be removed.
