Electrical safety and testing in your home
We carry out electrical testing in your home every five years to help keep you safe. This page explains what an Electrical Installation Condition Report is, how long it takes and what you need to do before your appointment.
Fire Safety GuideOur commitment to electrical safety
We are committed to keeping our homes safe and ensuring that electrical installations and systems are properly maintained. Electrical safety is essential to reducing the risk of injury, fire, and damage to homes.
Electrical safety is managed in line with our Electrical Safety Policy, which sets out how we meet our legal and regulatory responsibilities and how electrical safety is managed across our homes.
Understanding electrical safety and testing
Electrical safety checks are carried out to make sure that electrical installations and any fixed electrical equipment we are responsible for are safe to use.
These checks help identify potential hazards, such as damaged wiring or faulty installations, so that action can be taken before problems arise.
How we manage electrical safety
In line with our Electrical Safety Policy, we:
- carry out electrical safety testing at required intervals
- assess the condition of electrical installations we are responsible for
- take action where electrical safety risks are identified
- manage repairs or remedial works to electrical installations
- keep records of inspections, tests, and actions undertaken
Our approach focuses on identifying risks early and ensuring electrical systems remain safe.
Electrical safety information for communal blocks
If you live in a block with communal areas, we may provide information about electrical safety arrangements in shared areas, where appropriate.
This may include information about:
- electrical testing or inspections in communal areas
- any works planned that may affect shared spaces
- how electrical safety risks in communal areas are managed
This helps ensure residents are kept informed about safety arrangements within their building.
Access for electrical safety testing
We will need access to your home to carry out electrical inspections or safety testing.
We will contact you in advance to explain:
- why access is needed
- what the inspection will involve
- how long it is likely to take
Providing access helps us meet our safety responsibilities and keep your home safe.
Carrying out electrical works yourself
For safety reasons, you must not carry out electrical works in your home without our permission.
If you wish to install, alter, or replace electrical fittings or carry out any electrical works, you must:
- contact us for permission first, and
- ensure that any approved work is carried out by a competent and suitably qualified person
Unauthorised or unsafe electrical work can create serious risks and may affect the safety of your home and building.
