Bernicia celebrates staff excellence

Staff nominated by their colleagues for all they contribute to Bernicia are in the spotlight in our staff excellence awards.

Supporting tenants during the pandemic, ensuring frontline services are maintained, welfare calls to tenants in our retirement housing, positivity in helping colleagues during the challenges of remote working – just some of the outstanding work celebrated in our excellence awards.

Bernicia Chief Executive John Johnston paid tribute to all our winners, nominees and staff right across the business for their resilience and dedication to tenants and communities during the past year.

“It’s right that we take a little bit of time to celebrate the achievements of our staff at what has been a difficult time,” said John.

“We work hard at Bernicia to provide essential services and what we need to do every now and then is to put our foot on the ball and celebrate what we do together.

“We are valued by our tenants, customers and the North East region and that is down to your hard work and dedication.

Here’s the full roll of honour:

Colleagues Champion:

Winner: Louise Allen, Team Leader Retirement Housing

“Louise epitomises everything Bernicia is about. Empathetic, a team player, a positive ‘can do’ attitude, customer focused, compassionate and supportive.”

Newcomer of the Year:

Winner: Jade Audsley, Customer Contact Advisor, Warden Control

“Jade started here a year ago with no work experience for over seven years prior, due to raising her two children, and grabbed the opportunity with both hands.”

Unsung Hero (joint winners)

Adrienne Newton, Central Services Officer at Kingston

“Adrienne has been amazing over the last year during lockdown. Adrienne has provided an excellent service while maintaining and exceeding the already amazing relationships she has with insurance companies, brokers, colleagues and clients.”

Vanessa Robinson, Communications Manager

“Vanessa always puts 120% into everything she does. She researches, offers ideas, influences change and generally delivers an exceptional service to all her colleagues in the work that she does.”

Project Team of the Year

Winner: Performance Management Project

“During a pandemic, the People Services Team pulled together and collectively introduced a new way to do performance management at Bernicia – delivering something new in such an agile way.”

Team of the Year (joint winners)

PMD and Durham Handyperson Service

“On the frontline of maintenance and void work it has been difficult and stressful, with ever changing rules. We have been the frontline in managing basic life facilities that are necessary for our tenants to continue their everyday lives through the hard times, while maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.”

Customer Contact Centre

“From the beginning of the outbreak, we have had to work to keep the communications open for Bernicia to provide a service to our tenants. We have pulled together as a team, helping each other through the highs and lows of work/life balance.”

Wardens

“Even when they were unable to attend their schemes during the first lockdown, which I know many found difficult, they were always on the phone to tenants, making sure they were safe and had everything they needed.”

Apprentices

Winner: Anna Humble, Housing Apprentice, Durham

“If you ask Anna if she knows how to do something, she will often answer ‘I haven’t done it before but I’ll try it and if I get stuck, I’ll ask for help’. You really can’t ask for more.”
