What does Bernicia stand for?

Bernicia is more than just a name, it’s a way of doing business – The Bernicia Way.

More than just a landlord

Bernicia was the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the North, covering the modern-day areas of Berwickshire, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and Durham, in essence stretching from the Forth to the Tees. We chose the name as the location of our homes and estates closely matched this geography, but for us Bernicia stands for much more.

We believe, following a period of change and modernisation, that we are now a significant regional business that people recognise, want to work for and with, and who operate to high standards and values – from which we will not waiver.

Our history

Bernicia’s history brings together several housing organisations from across the North East.

Here’s a quick look at how we became one group:

Bernicia was formed in 2008 as the parent company for Cheviot Housing Association, established around 1969, and Wansbeck Homes following a Large Scale Voluntary Transfer (LSVT) of homes from Wansbeck District Council.

Around the same time, Four Housing Group was established as the parent company for Berwick Borough Housing Association and Three Rivers Housing Association.

In June 2016, Bernicia and Four Housing Group merged to form the wider Bernicia Group, with four subsidiary housing associations — Cheviot, Wansbeck, Three Rivers and Berwick.

In February 2018, all organisations fully amalgamated into a single structure, with Bernicia becoming the sole Registered Provider.
