The session covered important advice, including:

  • The fire service offers free home safety checks.
  • Cooking is the biggest cause of fire call-outs, using extractor fans can help.
  • Other causes include steam from showers, hair styling, and smoking.
  • Simple steps like keeping ovens clean, not overloading extension leads, and giving heaters plenty of space can make a big difference.
  • Use battery candles instead of real ones.
  • Residents were also reminded to let Bernicia know if they use oxygen at home and to store mobility scooters safely in accordance with Bernicia’s policy.

Gillian Wilson, Head of Health and Safety, said: Bernicia maintains a strong, proactive partnership with Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, working together to ensure the safety and well-being of our tenants in their homes.

The talk also highlighted support available for those who are hard of hearing, and explained how everyday items, such as emollient creams, can pose risks if clothing becomes coated in them.

The event was a great chance to ask questions, share tips, and learn how to keep homes safe.
