Bernicia investing in children's learning

Learning has never been as much fun for the youngsters at two Bedlington nursery schools.

They are enjoying playing with a host of new toys and equipment inside and outside the classroom, bringing fresh impetus to their learning with the support of the Bernicia Community Investment Fund.

The Spring Bedlington and Spring Bedlington Station nurseries were awarded a total of £2,300 from the fund which supports projects promoting social, economic and environmental inclusion in communities where Bernicia tenants and customers live.

Leanne Watt (pictured) and her team at Bedlington Station have invested in a new play area outside the nursery classroom based within the Bedlington Station Primary School, buying new toys, seating and storage equipment – all to foster their “curiosity approach” to learning.

Specially selected textured building blocks and wooden shapes in amongst toy  dinosaurs, farm animals and cooking utensils help stimulate children’s dexterity and fire their imagination.

“The difference the investment fund grant has made is immeasurable,” said nursery manager Leanne.

“It’s been brilliant to be able to update a lot of our play equipment for both inside and out of the classroom.

“We’ve looked at getting the maximum value from everything we’ve bought with the grant to help stimulate learning.

“The children love it – their imaginations are amazing. We can pick up from their observations how much they love the new equipment.”

Jonathan Holland, Bernicia customer engagement officer, said: “It’s terrific to see the impact the new equipment is having on children’s learning and to know the difference it is making.

“The Community Investment Fund is targeted at delivering support into the heart of the communities where our tenants live.”

Spring nurseries are award-winning nurseries located across the UK from charity Action for Children. The charity works with vulnerable children and young people by providing practical and emotional care and support.
