Couple Rebecca Turner and Kieran Hakin are settling into their new Bernicia home as they plan for the biggest day of their lives.
Rebecca is expecting their first baby in October and their new build two-bedroom house at Wayside Point in Ellington, Northumberland, is the perfect place to welcome home new mum and baby later this year.
The couple, both aged 20, are enjoying life in one of 28 Bernicia homes built for affordable rent on the site of the former Ellington Colliery site, home of the North East’s last deep mine which closed in 2005.
Ascent Homes built the properties for Bernicia which are a mix of nine two-bedroom bungalows, 12 two-bedroom homes and seven three-bedroom properties – all at affordable rents. All the properties have been rented with owners enjoying the amenities of Ellington village and the surrounding Northumberland coast and countryside.
“Our home is perfect, we’re over the moon with it,” said Rebecca, who works as a carer.
“How many 20-year-olds get to live in a property like this these days?
“My mam first told me about it – she had seen it on Northumberland Homefinder and we went to have a look around outside at six o’clock one night.
“We loved the style and the size, it’s lovely and quiet. We applied and within a week we’d been accepted for the property and we moved in last month. It’s met all our expectations.
“Our parents are proud of us, they’ve been around to see us and love it.”
Rebecca and Kieran, a maintenance worker at Manor Walks Shopping Centre in Cramlington, are getting to know the area, with plans to take their new born on a walk down to the beach at nearby Cresswell.
John Johnston, Bernicia Chief Executive, said: “Our new homes at Wayside Point are helping meet the demand for quality new build properties at affordable rents in a popular area, with great transport links across Northumberland and to Newcastle.”
Ends.
Bernicia has become the first organisation outside the public sector to sign a Northumberland County Council pledge to help young people leaving care achieve their ambitions. The council’s Care Leaver Covenant 2023+ renews the local authority’s promise to provide care-experienced young people aged 16…
As the years unfold, a transformation occurs — not just in ourselves but also in the homes we choose to inhabit.
