New Start scheme ready to offer new careers

Bernicia is excited to launch New Start, an innovative employability programme to help unlock potential across the North of Tyne, funded by the Government’s UK Community Renewal Fund.

We’re partnering with Changing Lives, Your Homes Newcastle, Efficiency North, Karbon Homes, Northumberland County Council, North Tyneside Council and the North of Tyne Combined Authority to deliver New Start, offering customers aged 25 and over the opportunity to get real life work experience, with a real wage and the qualifications needed to boost careers.

All of the placements will be available to view from Friday 10th December, and you can find out more about New Start and how to apply by visiting www.karbonhomes.co.uk/newstart.

The partnership has received £716,612 from the Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund, an initiative which aims to support people and communities most in need across the country.

The eight-month project will incorporate new ways of thinking and build on the success of existing employment schemes.

It includes:

  • A Foundational Economy Study in North Shields, Blyth and Byker, aimed at identifying the barriers to employability in those communities.
  • A new employability programme called ‘New Start’, providing paid work placements for over 25s building on the successful Government Kickstart scheme aimed at 16-24 year olds.
  • A feasibility study, to explore the idea of a shared placement model of employment for North East small and medium-sized businesses.

The project is backed by the North of Tyne Combined Authority, which put it forward for Government consideration and is supporting with aspects of its delivery. It is one of two which has received UK Community Renewal Funding in the North of Tyne area and one of eight in the wider North East.
