Meet our latest apprentices on Employability Day 2024 – maintaining Bernicia’s proud tradition of supporting young people into work and guiding them along the path to a rewarding career.
Our Chief Executive John Johnston greeted the 11 young people as they embarked on their new apprenticeship roles with Bernicia as electricians, bricklayers, plasterers, plumbers, grounds maintenance workers, business administrator, IT specialist and housing assistant.
Bernicia has recruited over 100 apprentices into its award-winning programme over the past 15 years since its formation – with 71 current and former apprentices still working for the business.
Employability Day is promoting ‘Employment Support for Every Citizen’, recognising the expertise Bernicia and organisations in the employment support sector have in helping people overcome barriers to getting good jobs.
Bernicia has invested £2m in an employability team of experts linking tenants and people living in areas where our homes are to job opportunities, upskilling and working with regional employers to help them recruit the workers they need.
The new Bernicia apprentices all have a dedicated mentor, who have received specialist training, as well as pastoral support to help them with their wellbeing and qualifications.
This year’s Bernicia apprentices and their roles are:
- Maddison Barron – housing apprenticeship
- Dan Brown – plumbing and domestic heating
- Ethan Foster – plumbing and domestic heating
- Denis Paton – plumbing and domestic heating
- Lauren Lashley – electrical
- Finley Lackenby-Mason – electrical
- Aiden Thomas Gray – bricklaying
- Charlie Stone – plastering
- Luke Johnston – horticulture/grounds maintenance
- Ethan Harbottle – IT

Bernicia has a generous pay structure, paying above the apprentice national minimum wage.
Jackie Johnson, Bernicia employability manager, said: “We are proud to have a 95% retention rate in terms of apprentices finishing their apprenticeship and achieving their qualification.
“We recognise the importance of being able to nurture our own workforce of tomorrow and take all the steps we can to support and refine our apprenticeship programme.
“Apprentices have their own mentor to support their learning and growth, with pastoral care to support their mental health and wellbeing.”
