New apprentices begin careers with Bernicia

Meet our new apprentices who we’re delighted to welcome to Bernicia!

They’ve taken their first steps into the business and we look forward to seeing them build their careers with us.

The 14 new recruits will work in roles across our business after an induction programme introducing them to Bernicia.

The apprentices have done fantastically well to reach this point – each one passing an assessment and interview process, whittled down from 1,217 applicants for the 14 roles.

The Class of 2026 have paid roles as apprentice joiners, a content creator, an apprenticeship with our anti-social behaviour and community team, business administration, data analyst, electricians, plumber, customer service and multi-skilled roles.

Our Executive Team led by Bernicia’s Chief Executive John Johnston, with Deputy Chief Executive Andrea Malcolm and Jenny Allinson, Executive Director of Communities, were there to meet the new recruits and introduce them to the business.

The induction gives the Class of 2026 all the essential information and early training they need to progress into their roles – a process put in place by our Employability Team.

Andrea said “Bernicia’s apprenticeship programme is now in its 15th year with a total of 110 people progressing through the programme. We currently have 34 apprentices working across Bernicia.

“Through the support of our employability team and mentors across the business we achieve a fantastic success rate, with 96% of participants completing their apprenticeship and 92% securing permanent roles with us.

“Our new corporate strategy sets out the ambition of five per cent of our workforce being apprentices by 2031, recognising them as a valuable element of our talent pipeline, with a huge role to play in Bernicia’s future.”
