A life-saving defibrillator has been installed at our Hatchmeadow age exclusive location in Ashington, helping keep our tenants, colleagues and the local community safe.
Bernicia has partnered with Ashington Town Council which is leading a drive to fit 12 defibrillators at key locations across the town to widen the life-saving cover for people going into cardiac arrest.
The defibrillator is fitted outside the main entrance doors at our popular Hatchmeadow location, just off Ashington town centre, easily accessible for colleagues and local people if needed in an emergency.
Bernicia location co-ordinator Ruth Bunn – and all our location co-ordinators – are trained in using defibrillators as part of their first aid training.
Ashington town and county councillor Caroline Ball said: “Our partnership with Bernicia is really important as you are right here in the heart of our community.
“It means that we have a defibrillator here for the tenants at Hatchmeadow as well as the wider local community.
“You don’t have to be trained to use them. If you’re dealing with someone you love in a medical emergency, the last thing you need is something complicated. This is simple to use.”
In an emergency, a 999 call will give those helping a patient an access code to open up the defibrillator cabinet.
From there, the unit talks those giving help through the process of applying and using the defibrillator to help the person suffering a cardiac arrest.
The 12 defibrillators were bought through Northumberland County Council funding to councillors Caroline Ball, Brian Gallacher, Lynne Grimshaw, Jim Lang, Ken Parry, and Mark Purvis.
