Northern Soul Kitchen serves up Berwick success

Bernicia supports Northern Soul Kitchen community project

A new cafe cooking up tasty meals from unsold food continues to go from strength to strength with confirmation it is the new primary shirt sponsor for Berwick Rangers Football Club this season.

Bernicia tenant Northern Soul Kitchen has hit the media headlines serving top quality food on a pay-as-you-feel basis to a growing customer base from its café in West Street, Berwick.  Its business model of sourcing unsold, yet edible, ingredients from supermarkets and local shops is proving a real hit with customers.

Co-directors Millie Stanford (pictured) and Harriet Grecian completely refurbished the premises which they lease from Bernicia.

The collaborative community project allows customers to pay what they feel they want to pay for their meal, or carry out tasks in return for the café, such as washing the dishes. Volunteers, including chefs from Edinburgh and Newcastle, give their time free of charge to create tasty dishes ranging from fish tacos and steaks, through to fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies.

Now Northern Soul Kitchen’s name will reach out across Scotland as the new primary shirt sponsor of Scottish League Division Two side Berwick Rangers.

David Letham, founder of St Andrews Berwick Rangers Supporters group, won the front of shirt sponsor prize at the club’s sponsor draw and kindly donated the shirt sponsorship to the community café.  “It’s a good community initiative that is just starting up and I’m happy to help them by donating this sponsorship and hopefully forging a link between Berwick Rangers and the local community in the process,” David told the club’s website.

Harriet said: “David has been so lovely and got behind our project, building our website for us. We are looking to work more with Berwick Rangers; the crowd that go to the football might not be the crowd coming into our café so we can raise greater awareness of who we are through having our brand on their shirts. The response in Berwick has been incredible. It’s got to the point where we have generous people paying extra for someone else who may not be able to afford their lunch”

“Without the support of Bernicia we couldn’t have got the business off the ground. They’ve been very understanding, amazing really and 100% supportive of what we do.”

Jeff Boyd, Bernicia Assistant Director of Development, said: “The Northern Soul Kitchen team completely refurbished the listed building’s interior to turn it into the welcoming environment it is today.

“It’s fantastic to see the business thriving, which highlights how the issue of reducing food waste to tackle food poverty provides a really important community service to Berwick.”
