Our New Start Jobs provide real work experience in career start roles for people aged 25 and over.

Whether you’re looking for your first job, or you want to change your career path, New Start will get your foot in the door, giving you access to work experience, a wage and the qualifications to take your career path forwards.

Bernicia is leading a partnership with Your Homes Newcastle, Northumberland County Council, North Tyneside Council, Changing Lives, Efficiency North and Karbon Homes, with all the roles exclusively available to tenants and customers of these organisations.

This project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund.

Salary: £8.91 per hour, rising to £9.50 per hour from 1st April 2022

Fixed Term: 5 months

Hours: Up to 30 hours per week. Flexible working and part time will be available.

Experience: No experience necessary

Interview Date: 19th or 20th January 2022

Start Date: Tuesday 1st February 2022

More than just a job

New Start roles offer much more than just a paid job for 5 months.

You will receive 121 support from an Employment Advisor during the recruitment process and during your fixed term role, so you get the most out of your experience and are ready to jump into your next role.

Pre-recruitment Support 

  1. 121 advice & support with a qualified Employment Advisor to explore the right role for you, and to give you interview prep support.
  2. Help break down any barriers or concerns applying for the roles, such as childcare, travel, confidence.

In Work Support 

  1. Dedicated New Start Advisor
  2. Development Days to cover things such as: skills matching, real time feedback from managers, job searching/horizon scanning.
  3. Qualification – you will have the opportunity to undertake a free qualification linked to your job role, and your career aspirations. You will be given the time and support to complete this role during your 5 months.


It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:

  1. If you are interested in applying for one of the roles, contact us now to arrange your appointment with our Employability Advisor.
  2. Once you are ready to apply for the role(s); you will be booked a slot at one of our Recruitment Events.These events are an opportunity to meet the employer in person, ask questions, hear more about the company and what the role involves.
  3. You will also have a 121 slot with the employer so you can get to know each other and see if the role is a good fit for you. You will be contacted within 48 hours if you were successful for the role!

What is the Community Renewal Fund?

The UK Community Renewal Fund is a UK Government programme for 2021/22. It aims to support people and communities most in need across the UK to pilot programmes and new approaches to prepare for the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It invests in skills, community and place, local business and supporting people into employment.

How much will I get paid?

You’ll be paid National Minimum Wage.

The current rates are:

£8.91 per hour, rising to £9.50 per hour from 1st April 2022


Are New Start roles available to anyone?

New Start roles are only open to customers of  Bernicia, Your Homes Newcastle, Northumberland County Council, North Tyneside Council, Changing Lives, Efficiency North and Karbon Homes.


Are there any events taking place where I can find out more?

Yes, you can meet employers and discuss the roles available at our recruitment events. They will be taking place on the following dates:

Newcastle (venue TBC) – Wednesday 19th January 2022, time tbc

Northumberland (venue TBC) – Thursday 20th January 2022, time tbc
