Bernicia honoured as one of equality best26th October 2018
Bernicia is celebrating winning the ‘Larger Organisation Making a Difference in the Community’ accolade at the North East Equality Awards.
Judges named Bernicia as joint winner alongside Keepmoat Homes at an awards evening at the NewcastleGateshead Hilton Hotel.
Jeannie McMillan, Bernicia Director of Housing Services, collected the award on behalf of the business.
Bernicia’s award submission impressed judges at the prestigious event which celebrates the everyday achievements of regional organisations, individuals and groups embedding inclusivity through good equality and diversity practice.
Judges commented on the night about how impressed they were with Bernicia’s Learning Hives project in Bedlington and Newbiggin.
The centres run in conjunction with partners at the Northern Learning Trust help local tenants upskill to find new work, manage their finances and learn practical skills.
“Bernicia have shown commitment in providing holistic support to tenants and the community,” said judges in their summary of the entrants and award winners.
“This year has set a precedent, the amount of applications this year has been astounding and the content inspiring. It is heartening to see how many organisations, large and small are doing so many amazing things.”
Bernicia’s work on the ‘Runway’ programme helping give young people the skills they need to follow their career of choice also featured strongly in Bernicia’s award entry.
Jeannie McMillan, Bernicia Director of Housing Services, said: “We are thrilled to win this award which recognises the extra mile our staff go to work closely with tenants and communities, to understand their concerns and address them. Our Learning Hives in Bedlington and Newbiggin are at the heart of those communities, working with people to give them the tools and skills they need to progress in their lives.
“The awards evening was a fantastic showcase stacked with talented people, groups and businesses whose actions make a big difference to people’s lives. As an employer, we work hard to embed equality and diversity into the fabric of our business, recognising the value this brings to our organisation.”
