Bedlington Learning Hive team ready to give New Year support10th January 2019
Great to see our friends at Bedlington Learning Hive prepared for another year helping local people into work.
The fantastic team led by the Northern Learning Trust’s Nicola Robinson work with around 50 clients every month at their Bedlington Station base supported by Bernicia.
Our tenants are part of the wider community to benefit from their expert support giving people access to educational qualifications, new skills and help to build their self-confidence.
Together with the Learning Hive at Newbiggin led by Cate Blatherwick and her team of volunteers, the hives are the focal point for local people looking to upskill and seize employment opportunities.
They offer a wide range of courses such as English and Maths, healthy eating, cognitive behavioural techniques, retail and construction skills. The Bedlington team works with around 50 people every month.
Kelly Wilkinson is just one local resident to benefit from the learning hive’s support. She found the time to fit in studies at the hive, gaining certificates in Maths, English, CBT, retail, hospitality and hygiene, around her two jobs as a cleaner and a steward at Newcastle United home games.
The learning hives also assist clients with job searches, work with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and refer people to foodbanks who need extra support.
Pictured left to right are Nicola Robinson, volunteers Abi Law and Kelly Wilkinson, learner Jimmy Miller and volunteer Robert Curtis. Jimmy has just completed his Construction Skills Certification Scheme which will allow him to work on building sites, opening up new employment opportunities for him.
The Bedlington team is completed by volunteers Linda Howe, Kaye Brewis and David Dart.
The property also boasts a community garden with produce grown going back to local people – a real community asset!
