A celebration was held recently at Chillingham House, one of Bernicia’s retirement housing schemes, to mark the 25th anniversary of the building’s opening, as well as 25 years’ long service for the scheme’s warden, Carol Watson.
Representatives from Bernicia’s management and retirement teams joined tenants and their families at the scheme in Sunderland to celebrate the two anniversaries with a small presentation and entertainment by a local singer.
Carol Watson, who has been warden at the scheme since its opening in 1993, was presented with flowers and a gift voucher, and gifts were also presented to three tenants who have lived at the scheme since it opened 25 years ago.
Daniel Bray, retirement housing manager at Bernicia, said: “We’re passionate about creating places where people want to live and that’s why our retirement housing schemes are so important.
“Chillingham House provides accommodation to people over the age of 55, helping people to stay independent for longer, and it is with great pride that we have celebrated the scheme’s 25th anniversary with its residents, as well as Carol’s 25 years’ long service – whose work with the residents has been invaluable.”
Chillingham House has also recently benefitted from a £60,000 makeover, in which the building was modernised with fresh décor including new furniture in the communal lounge, and new carpets, curtains and blinds throughout.
Daniel continued: “The happiness and comfort of our tenants is paramount, which is why we involved our residents in the decision making process for the scheme’s recent transformation.
“We invited all tenants to a coffee morning to discuss their ideas for décor, including preferred colour schemes, and were thrilled with the feedback. All tenants have commented on how light, airy and modern the building is now looking, with one even comparing the décor to that of a luxury hotel!”
